Our company – the history of the ZTS

The following table will give you an impression of the most important events in the history of our company.

06. March 1948 Foundation of the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH.

The first articles of partnership are being signed by the Mayor Andreas Gayk on behalf of the partner City of Kiel and by the Secretary of State Bruno Diekmann on behalf of the partner State of Schleswig-Holstein. The company's purpose is defined “Object of the company is the establishment and ongoing support of a sea fish-market in Kiel . The company serves as an organization of public utility.” Business started with 5 employees at first. By the end of 1948, as many as 23 people were employed at the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH.
01. July 1948 The Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH takes on the scope „Träger der Fischverteilungsstelle Kiel.“ decreed by the food, agricultural and forestry office. This scope remained the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH's main object for more than 20 years. 1953 The deep-sea fishery Kiel transfers the ice factory with a capacity of approximately 100 tons per day to the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH, who continues this business of providing for fishery and fish economy until 1975. 1961 The Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH expands its business to the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. In Büsum a real estate measuring c. 3200 m² is being rented on which a receiving-office for sea-fish, a cooling plant and an ice factory are located, and a sub-office of the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH is being established. Approximately 20 of the bigger cutter unload their cargo. The conveniently short distance to the main herring-fishery in and by the North Sea is the reason for the establishment of a sub-office. 1967 The site of the sea fish-market, which was so far only rented, is being purchased by the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH, including all buildings and interiors. 1971/72 The fishing economy, including the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH, experiences difficult years. Ships belonging to the deep-sea fleet are being wrecked. Loads of Cuxhaven 's steam-ship cargo are switched to truck transport. Trawlers do not unload their cargo in Kiel any longer. 1974 The sub-office in Büsum is being closed.. 1975 Shut-down of the ice factory. 1979 The main department of the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH, the sales- and loading-plant, is being closed due to continually decreasing amounts of disembarkation. The sections real estate and freezing depot remain. 1981 The management of the freezing depots ends. After the disembarkations of frozen fish stay away, the freezing deposits are no longer used to their full capacity. The lease of empty areas to other branches of business is a consequence of discontinued business by the Hochseefischerei Kiel GmbH, the Kiel Frost GmbH and various fishery wholesale firms. The site of the sea fish-market therefore develops into a regular industrial area. 1987 The government of Schleswig-Holstein decides on the foundation of a research institute for marine geo-sciences – GEOMAR. The site of the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH is chosen as a location for this science institute among several other alternatives. 1990 The Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH sells part of its site on the utmost eastern end measuring c. 26.800 m² to the State of Schleswig-Holstein. The State erects the new building for the research institute GEOMAR on this area, which can be first occupied in 1996. 1993 After 1971, the Kieler Seefischmarkt GmbH has continued to deviate itself from the business object stated in the articles of partnership. Therefore it is obligatory to redefine the business object. This takes place in June 1993 by a modification of the articles of partnership. In this connexion the partners rename their company:

Zentrum für maritime Technologie und Seefischmarkt ZTS Grundstücksverwaltung GmbH
(Centre for maritime technology and sea-fish market
ZTS real estate agency Ltd.)

The business object reads as follows:

Establishment of scientific and technical research and study institutes in the field of oceanography – this includes especially the institutions of the Centre of Maritime Geo-sciences (GEOMAR) and closely related operating departments of the university and companies – by rent or leas and sale of sites owned by the company,
Rent and lease of sites owned by the company to fishery businesses.

Nowadays the ZTS GmbH manages a site of approximately 70.000 m². The usable area of the buildings is as large as c. 42.000 m². On the site 14 groups of buildings have been erected.
